Gorey Chamber has been nominated for two of the top prizes at the 2019 Chambers Ireland Awards next month.
The Gorey Visitor Centre was nominated in the Most Innovative Project category while Gorey Chamber has also been shortlisted for Best Marketing Campaign for its ‘Digital Town’ initiative.
The Chamber Awards seek to recognise the outstanding work of Chambers around the country in a variety of categories, from innovative projects to successful events.
The Gorey Chamber’s ‘Digital Town’ initiative was an ongoing PR campaign throughout 2018 that culminated in Gorey’s designation as Ireland’s first ever Digital Town by the IEDR and host of ‘Internet Day’ last October.
The highlights of the campaign included a visit to the town by RTE’s George Lee who spoke to staff at Innovate for a segment on Six One news.
Gorey Visitor Centre, which was launched by the Chamber in January 2018, welcomed 7,000 tourists through its doors and helped raise €24,000 for local charities through fundraising events.
“Gorey Chamber is competing against much larger groups from Dublin, Cork and Kilkenny, which is an impressive achievement for a small voluntary organisation like ours,” said Gorey Chamber CEO Diarmuid Devereux.
“Gorey Chamber is taking a leadership role and been proactive in driving many projects to develop the digital economy, including actively promoting the ‘de-commute programme’ and encouraging enterprise investment in the area.
“The Chamber was also instrumental in delivering high-speed broadband in the town, which has stimulated a significant increase in digital activity, including the launch of the tech co-working space, The Hatch Lab.
“As well as preparing our town for the economy of the future, we remain focused on driving more and more economic activity into our retail, tourism and hospitality sectors, which are so important to Gorey.
“That’s why we launched the Gorey Visitor Centre last year, which has been a huge success.
“Both of these nominations show that Gorey Chamber is focused on promoting existing businesses in the town, but also preparing for the future by bringing in more high paying jobs from the tech sector.”
The 2019 Chamber Awards ceremony takes place on Wednesday 10th April 2019 when the winners will be announced.
